I love this game but I absolutely suck at it and I'm never sure if I'm playing it right.
It's quite different to other games as it is an actual survival game where other "survival" games are just crafting games.
I remember early on I used to draw the maps on a notepad as I played because it's easy to get lost and die...
The last 4 words of your post are my entire experience with that game lol
To be fair that's how we all start!

Yes, yes and yes. Also injuries and desease.
