Was Elizabeth St originally Elizabeth Creek? Or is that just a joke about how it floods? I think I remember reading it used to be a creek.

Although the whole area just bogged like mad (bearbrass has some hilarious anecdotes) you're probably thinking of this article

I think I read that a bullock dray drowned in a rather large puddle at the corner of collins and elizabeth in the 1800's
