My brain just can't compute the Tillies in turquoise and Sweden in yellow, I've gotten confused about 10 times.

[–] No1 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I keep wondering why the crowd is so loud for Sweden, then "Oh, that's us, dopey"

[–] MisssDarylC 2 points 1 year ago

Hahaha same thing I've been saying to myself.

We did good.

Just look where we are 4th. That's very good.

We are the highest non-european team. We can't expect them to beat European teams who have better resources and can leverage facilities used by mens.

Their leagues bring in magnitudes more money and thus can invest more than we can ever hope to match. And considering the majority of professional development and clout here is aimed at oval ball sports.

We can’t expect them to beat European teams who have better resources and can leverage facilities used by mens.

Look at the Aussies in those European leagues.

  • Sam Kerr, Chelsea
  • Caitlin Foord, Arsenal
  • Mary Fowler, Man City
  • And the others...

Oh, we can and have beaten European teams. Cough. France. Ranked 5. Cough.

I'm calling this a golden generation. Get on board. Choo-choo!

Didn't count France as it was through a penalty shootout which could go 50/50. We beat them but it was far from convincing and even if we got to penalty shootouts for all our games it's unlikely we'd win all of them.

Yes we do have players but we don't have depth. England and Spain and even Sweden have 95 percent of players in the European leagues.

And in terms of Spain and England in top teams of top leagues. Someone playing for Sydney FC wouldn't even get a look in for the Spanish or English side.

I like good attack vs great defence But fair enough. I'll just go for the underdog Matildas.

Sometimes underdogs do well. I think we need to think outside of the world cup, for both genders and focus on our domestic leagues. Their improvement correlates directly to the improvement of the national team, especially at grassroots level. I'm really hoping for a promotion and relegation and to include way more teams through multiple leagues. That would be a good first start.

They say 2-0 is the most dangerous score in football.

Show em why, Tillie's!

[–] Nath 1 points 1 year ago

I don't believe that is going to happen.

So with my bad eyesight, I was going for the team in gold for a minute.

Then I realised we were the green.

Carn the Tealies!

Penalty Sweden ☹️

[–] No1 3 points 1 year ago

Pretty good game so far. Sweden are good. We're playing well too. Both teams are playing positive footy.

Mary Fowler. Whoo. How good. And only 20? Matildas are gonna get better as she improves.

[–] Nath 3 points 1 year ago

Ending the half with a pair of concussions.

gg.

Sweden probably the better team, but Tillies make us proud. The future is bright.

[–] Nath 3 points 1 year ago

Sweden played a fair and great game. I disliked the tactics England employed, but Sweden were clean across the board. Well played.

[–] No1 2 points 1 year ago

Yeah whistle free kicks and give yellow cards now ...

[–] No1 2 points 1 year ago

Is this English ref gonna show a yellow? Ever?

[–] MisssDarylC 2 points 1 year ago

Sweden in their villain era - not letting the Aussies win on their home soil. /s

[–] Nath 2 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Is it racist to be thinking that the Swedish players look exactly how you'd picture a Swedish women's football team?

[–] No1 1 points 1 year ago

Swedish GK is a ring in!

[–] brave 1 points 1 year ago

The English team is all blondies except for one person I think. Makes it a bit more confusing to follow them on the pitch. 🤣

[–] MisssDarylC 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I don't understand the rules, so I don't fully feel I'm in the right spot the question the penalty but it didn't feel fair.

[–] No1 2 points 1 year ago

It was a bit soft, but a fair call. Basically any touch of the feet or legs is asking for trouble.

[–] No1 1 points 1 year ago

Aussies picking up the attack after the Swedes had all the running at the start

[–] MisssDarylC 1 points 1 year ago

Come on Tillies! We can do this.

[–] No1 1 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Good break Sweden. Dammit

[–] No1 1 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

That looked like her knee is destroyed 😞

If she's walking, MCL?

[–] MisssDarylC 1 points 1 year ago

I don't know much about soccer/football but I can see how good Sweden are.

[–] MisssDarylC 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I think they should've subbed Sam off, but I understand why she wouldn't want to be off. It's a hard one.

[–] No1 2 points 1 year ago

Warrior!

I just hope it's nothing serious.

[–] No1 1 points 1 year ago

Fowler has such great vision.

[–] No1 1 points 1 year ago

Aussie free kicks, erm. A bit wasted....

[–] MisssDarylC 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Is it just me or has the ref let Sweden get away with a lot?

[–] No1 2 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

Yeah, nah. They played hard. Overall the game was allowed to be played with some contact, which I like.

I thought a couple of their earlier tackles were borderline yellow, and maybe a couple of fouls on Aussies missed. Later on the continuous fouls seemed like yellows should have been given. They were. Too late to make a difference.

But some Aussie fouls were let go too.

Also, neither team was faking contact and rolling around.

The referee didn't decide this game. We take it on the chin, and move on and UP!

[–] MisssDarylC 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Thank you for answering, I genuinely wasn't sure as I'm new to all of this, but I don't want to be stereotypical and just blame the ref. Sweden were very clean and played really well.

[–] No1 2 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

No worries. Enjoy the newness! It's great to find a passion, and to learn more about it as you go.

But seriously, there's nothing to say your opinion is less than mine. New or not.

Anything people say about football except the score are opinions. And everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Even those wrong people that disagree with me.
