Fallout 4 feels more like a Borderlands game with a Fallout skin. I don't like it. Player choice is gone, dialogue is dumbed down, perks and skills are dumbed down too and don't matter in any skillchecks. The only one that has an effect is charisma and that's stretching it. I just don't feel like I have any impact. And I don't like the story. It's like Skyrim compared to older games. Sure it's a big world, and maybe prettier, but everything is simplified and I feel the same in the beginning of the game and at the end. There's nothing wrong with simplifying things, but this is taking it too far in my opinion.

I understand this review as a kind of "oh wow I forgot this existed!" Kind of review. The article irks me a bit because it feels like like it's sweeping decade old criticism under the rug.

The dialog system is deeply flawed in F4 and no it's not that our expectations needed to be adjusted. It's been a decade and we still groan about it for a reason.

This is either manufactured nostalgia or an insubstantial weekly write-up. Take your pick

Contrarian opinion here, so if you like Fallout 4, probably skip this comment.

As someone that's played Fallout since the original game was new, Fallout 4 was like a family member dying. I got a few hours in, and quit in absolute disgust.

Got into the franchise with NV and it is still one of my favorites. Played 1, 2 and 3 while waiting for 4. It turned out to be one massive disappointment. I don't think I even played half of it.

On the other hand, at the time I found my fix in Wasteland 2.

that 45 min power armor made me realize that there is something very wrong

I like Fallout 4, spent hundreds of hours in it, and couldn't blame you with that comment at all. For all the improvements that FO4 makes to graphics, gameplay, etc, it really trounces on the story side in general.

Don't get me wrong, I understand people that like Fallout 4 on its own merits. If it had been released as a new IP, I wouldn't have any animosity towards the game at all.

It's just that, there's a reason Bethesda started releasing games under the Fallout name instead of a new IP's name, and it was to sell the game to the existing Fallout audience. And I feel like I met them halfway in embracing FO3 and NV, but FO4 was a bridge too far.

It's fine, but I like 3 and NV more. (Still need to play through 2 as well)

Between 1 and 2, I enjoyed 1's story (after the timed mission) and world more, but 2's graphics and UI updates were a huge step up

Any tips for picking up where I left off? I always struggle when I get close to the end of the main story with choosing a side.

[–] briongloid 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

It really depends on how long its been since you played it, if you don't remember anything than its time to start again.

Did you make it up to the leader of the Institute?

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

I did. I've probably started it 3 or 4 times. I'm very bad about finishing long open-world games. Especially if they have a pivotal choice like Fallout often does.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I just reached level 69. Playing on steam deck. Finished all side quests I can.

At the point of no return for the brotherhood, the railroad and the institute.

I ran away from Preston on his first mission with the death claw so I didn't have to listen to his shit.

Going to do the minute men next then off tho nuka world and far harbour.

After the dlc I'll save the do each faction untill the end.

Will probably leave it there untill the big update that's supposed to be coming this year.

Been playing vanilla. Will probably mod after the update.

Generally playing a vanilla run on any Bethesda is great for the first run, leaving a whole different experience available for round 2.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Agreed, but I can’t play it again because I will fall into the modding rabbit hole of eternal doom!

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Did that. Broke some things. Couldn't recover. Dropped it. Normal Bethesda experience.

Well, Fallout 5 probably isn't coming out for at least another decade, assuming that it ever does make it out the door, so you've got no shortage of time to spend in that hole.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

I'm actually playing it now! If you've played it before and want a bit of a change, but without changing everything (and are on PC), I recommend The Midnight Ride. Read through the mods it adds to see if it's for you, but it all felt good to me mostly. The power armour changes are very nice for me. You can add other mods on top of this too if you wish (Fourville and Sim Settlements 2 are two I've added on top of as well and also recommend).

It's also worth taking a look at Fallout 4 VR for anyone that's into VR. Mods stealthily makes it into the best and most immersive experience yet, in my heavily biased opinion.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

Skyrim in VR was mind blowing. I didn't get that many hours in it because the space requirements for VR just limited me too often to do VR that heavily, but even just the cutscenes at the beginning hit very different in VR. The cart ride through the town up to seeing the first dragon are something else, and while I only made it to white run or so, the world just feels huge in a completely different way than in 2D.

Picked it up during this summer sale! Enjoying it so far. Fallout 3 has been one of my favorite games since it released, so we'll see how 4 stacks up

If you haven't played New Vegas, between 3 and 4, I would recommend playing that.
