I cannot understand this obsession with physical location work for non blue collar workers unless your assets are tied to real estate speculation lol

If I was a CEO, I would be fucking delighted that my workers are choosing to use their own property to generate profit for me. I would save so much money by not having to have a giant office, parking space, consume electricity, and a bunch of electronics

Other than the massive risk of long term illness or death due to covid I actually kinda like being in office. It makes it easier to complain to my coworkers about how management is risking our lives by making us come back to the office.

I kind of prefer being in my office as well, but that’s because I like my managers and coworkers. But it’s clear that so many people don’t like one or the other and these annoying CEOs want to convince people that no, you actually like the office all the time

Mental well-being wise, I personally do get cabin fever working from home. Better than covid fever but if I had my druthers I'd have neither. Commuting also sucks though. Ideally I'd work in an office 2 minutes by foot from my home in a society with no plagues. Also it would be communist.

It gives up one form of control but exchanges it for another. The flock of middle managers don't get to pop in and watch 20 people to make sure they're at their desks and look at their screens and give pointless little instructions for everyone else to see and haggle about the coffee maker, sure. But remote workers can also barely communicate with one another without using official, recordable company resources. This is a boon to office job union busters, they can just search for "union" in their Slack instance's private messages and channels and fire the troublemakers.

I'd like to toss an explanation on top of real estate interests and wanting control: CEOs are petty, megalomaniacal idiots that work against their own interests on a regular basis and are constantly rewarded for it by the bureaucratic structure of the company.

Oh yeah I absolutely hated having two hours back to myself in the day from not having to commute, wearing comfortable clothes the whole day, the choice to cook my own healthy meals rather than pay for food court slop, making my own coffee and saving money, and having time and energy to see my friends and family more often. It was terrible for my mental health.

I suspect there a bit of a civil war in corporate upper management right now over work from home. Some people probably love it, it makes it easier to pull talent in since you're not limited to people who live/can move to the area your company is, and you can employ people in locations with lower cost of living and justify paying them less. Meanwhile other middle managers fucking hate it cuz they can't be little tyrants and it makes it increasingly obvious that they're redundant.

In videogame companies one of the tactics I saw employers use is to put the offices in the middle of fucking nowhere then have people move to the tiny ass out of the way location in buttfuck nowhere to work. This forces them into a state of 24/7 work because they often share housing with other employees and have literally nothing else to do in the area except socialise with one another. Having them living with each other also creates social pressures on them all about leaving and potentially fucking over housemates with debts or bills they can't afford.

The outcome of this is that it functionally makes their entire lives revolve around work.

Yeah it's insidious. Really incredibly unhealthy for the employees and causes massive burnout in the first 1 or 2 years. The thing is that the employees that then survive this shit are usually the most indoctrinated so they're easiest to control and build toxic corporate work cultures around.

He is correct. I have no attachment or passion or creativity for my job. I do it for the money. If you want attachment, hire my friends and give us time to interact. If you want passion, change the work to something else which I am passionate about. If you want creativity, give me free reins.
None of this will happen, because it is a job, and doing so would be unprofitable. Do not then be surprised when all I care about is money as well.
