Potentially stupid question: How long does it take for these upstream changes to make their way to Ubuntu?

Not sure if there's a definite timeline. While Ubuntu is Debian-based, as far as I know they handle releases very differently. Often Ubuntu "stable" has a bit more up to date versions of things than Debian "stable".

Ubuntu syncs packages from Debian Unstable, so it's unaffected by this Stable release.

The upcoming Ubuntu release timeline is apparently tracked here.

I have installed Debian 12 for a stable base and added flatpak for when I want a more current release of some apps.

So far I am quite happy with it.
