I find it very weird that Lemmy support gifs but does not support svg format, is there is a specific reason for that?

I'm not asking about the worst job. I'm asking about the grimmest one. For me it was when in my teenage years I was making candles you would put on a grave. Most of the time is was just filling the form, burn the right shape and passing it forward. But sometimes I had to fill in for a person who was selling these things, and that is where it gets grim. It was decades ago but I still remember one lady who asked what would be the best candle to memorialize her late husband. And she gave me the whole life story of her and her husband. I shit you not, it was the most touching love story I have ever heard. I quit the next day.

Often, its asked what the fediverse or lemmy needs more of in terms of content, but are there any specific features or functionality you really feel are lacking?

I was a wiz at google in the early 2000s. I would find obscure forums for every interest and usually get some pretty good info. My research skills haven't aged well, and I'd like to get a bit more with it.

I use:

• Rtings, for TVs and monitors
• Consumer reports, for <500
• Sites like scamreport where people rant about shitty companies not living up to their promises
• glassdoor, to see what a company's employees think and how they are treated

How do you research your purchases when there is so much AI slop out there and google doesn't really work right anymore. Duck duck go and bing are marginally better. Are there trusted impartial review sites?

At least in this post, I'm not advocating for any particular political position; I mean for this to be a more generalized discussion.

I have never understood what prompts people to attend political rallies. None of the current US political candidates 100% align with my views, but I am very confident that I made the right choice in who I voted for. That is to say, I'd consider myself a strong supporter of [name here].

To me, it feels like attending a political rally is like attending a college lecture. You have a person giving you information, but you don't gain anything by hearing it in-person as opposed to reading it or watching a recording. If I want to learn something, it's much more comfortable for me to read and article or watch a video in the comfort of my own home. If I want to understand what a political candidate stands for, I'd much rather watch a recording of a town-hall meeting or read something she (oops) wrote rather than taking the time to drive to a rally, get packed in with a bunch of other people, and simply stand and listen.

I understand concerts. Hearing live music sounds vastly different than listening to a recording. Same with movies; most of us don't have an IMAX theater at home. When you're trying to gather information, though, what's the draw in standing outside in a crowd at listening to it in person?

I found it quite impressive that people are capable of this. For me, I have neither energy, nor ability, nor comprehensive knowledge to do so. So, it is always fascinating (and a bit intimidating) to see people writing these all the time. I want to ask how you guys achieve this feat.

Maybe, is it that I am nonverbal so I cannit write coherently?

I've self hosted Mastodon twice in the past and both times, it took some real effort to keep the instance afloat.

The first time, the instance kept using up data until the hard drive filled up. Just for at most 4 users. I didn't know it kept the files on the local server and it filled up everything quick.

The second time, the cloud instance worked itself in a routine update.

Is there any fedi software that works best as a single user instance? Something low power but can still communicate and subscribe to mastodon accounts?

E.g. Tartarus instead of Tartaros, Daedalus instead of Daidalos, Cerberus instead of Kerberos, Cassandra instead of Kassandra... There are a lot of these names that are more widely used in their Romanized forms. Yet if we talk about mythological names instead the Greek names are more widely used (althrough this was different over 200 years ago)

I've found that AI has done literally nothing to improve my life in any way and has really just caused endless frustrations. From the enshitification of journalism to ruining pretty much all tech support and customer service, what is the point of this shit?

I work on the Salesforce platform and now I have their dumbass account managers harassing my team to buy into their stupid AI customer service agents. Really, the only AI highlight that I have seen is the guy that made the tool to spam job applications to combat worthless AI job recruiters and HR tools.

If you haven't read about it before, the term comes from the band Van Halen, who demanded that there were no brown M&M's backstage. People thought it was just a crazy rock star thing, but David Lee Roth later explained that it had a purpose:

Van Halen was the first band to take huge productions into tertiary, third-level markets. We’d pull up with nine 18-wheeler trucks, full of gear, where the standard was three trucks, max. … So just as a little test, in the technical aspect of the rider, it would say, “Article 148: There will be 15 amperage voltage sockets at 20-foot spaces, evenly, providing 19 amperes … ” This kind of thing. And article number 126, in the middle of nowhere, was, “There will be no brown M&M’s in the backstage area, upon pain of forfeiture of the show, with full compensation.”

So, when I would walk backstage, if I saw a brown M&M in that bowl … well, line-check the entire production. Guaranteed you’re going to arrive at a technical error. They didn’t read the contract. Guaranteed you’d run into a problem. Sometimes it would threaten to just destroy the whole show. Something like, literally, life-threatening.

My Brown M&M atm is AI-generated comments like this (first comment is referencing something like df = ... that they removed from the code, but left the comment, second comment is super useless):

That probably means whoever I got the code from just copy/pasted whatever the LLM spit out, and didn't actually think about the code at all.

What is a small detail that you pay attention to because it means there's bigger issues to watch out for?
