Instead of paying for the water bottles in your hotel room when they are not complimentary, fill up a reusable bottle in the fitness center. Nearly all hotels (at least in the US) provide filtered water in the fitness center.

Hey everyone, I hope you're doing well. I 24F from the PH and daughter of 60M & 57F, wanted to ask for your thoughts and advice regarding paying off debt. Recently, I've been struggling because my debt far exceeds my income, and I've found myself in a revolving cycle—borrowing again just to make payments on other loans.

For context, here's what I earn:

October 15th paycheck: $225

October 30th paycheck: $255

And these are my upcoming bills:

Due in October:

10/15 - Rent: $63

10/15 - Loan repaymen 1t: $70

10/15 - Another loan2 : $18

10/15 - Loan 3 debt: $25

10/24 - Internet bill: $30

10/25 - Loan4: $15

10/25 - Loan1: $140

10/28 - Loan2: $22

10/30 - Loan3: $58

For the first half of November:

11/4 - Loan: $35

11/5 - Loan: $18

11/6 - Electricity: $32

11/6 - Water: $13

11/9 - Loan: $15

11/9 - Loan: $20

11/10 - Loan: $22

11/12 - Loan: $22

11/16 - Loan: $19

11/19 - Loan: $35

I understand that this is all a result of my decisions to borrow, whether for unexpected expenses like family illnesses or natural disasters, or just trying to make ends meet while putting myself through school. These debts actually started last year while I was still studying, and paying for my own education during the pandemic and the return of face-to-face classes was a challenge.

Now, I really want to break free from this cycle. It's not just that I feel bad for myself; I'm also heartbroken over the opportunities I’m missing for my future. I graduated summa cum laude, but it feels like I'm being held back by financial constraints and a lack of knowledge on how to manage my money. I've been working for a few months now, and almost every paycheck goes toward debt repayment, but it feels never-ending. I don’t have any savings left either.

I’d appreciate any advice or help. Please be respectful of my post. I’ve tried applying for debt consolidation loans at banks, but I've been turned down every time.

Thank you for taking the time to read this. I’m really hoping for some guidance and a way forward.

31 years of life made me release that nothing takes you farther than doing things unconditionally.

Want to build a successful business? Do the things unconditionally without worrying much about it. Do it for love of it, do it for passion.

Want to have a happy relationship? Love your partner unconditionally. Love is not a condition that I will do this if you do that. Do it because you want to do it.

Want to be a good person? Help others unconditionally, just for the sake of helping others. Don’t do it for social media or to impress someone, do it just because you want it.

Whatever you want in life. Doing things unconditionally without expecting anything in return is really a superpower. Once you have it, it does magic and have a domino effect and knock down problem in all areas of your life.

In my car this works really well on the seats, not so well in the rear compartment where the doggies sit (SUV), but I just used it to clean the indoor doggies couch and it worked really well. so not perfect depending on the material, but really good!

You know those funny little tree shaped air fresheners that one person you know has about 30 of hanging from their rearview mirror? They can help deter spiders in your house/garage!

A common deterent you'll see peddled online is to use things like lemon or peppermint oil around doors and windows, because spiders dislike the smells (I guess).

Well, those car air fresheners cost a fraction of the price, and do the same amount of heavy lifting, if not more! I had a MASSIVE problem with MASSIVE spiders in my garage (USA massive, so like 1-2 inches across). I tried diatomaceous earth, insect repellent, killing every spider I saw, but nothing helped. Till one day, my wife made me literally throw the new one I had bought out of my car. I picked it up and set it near the door. Ever since, zero spiders (not true, I had a singular tiny jumping spider yesterday).

Is this conflating two events that probably aren't related? Almost certainly. Does this have any basis in science? Doubtful at best. Will I continue to peddle this myth until ordered to cease and desist by a court of law? So long as the spiders stay out.

If your flight is close to full, most likely they’ll ask at the gate for volunteers to check bags (for free) or will demand it as the boarding process starts and the overhead bins fill up.

When you arrive to the airport, go to the agent assistance line and explain your flight is full and you’re in a later boarding group. That since they’ll be doing gate checking, please would it be possible to check your bag without a fee now instead of lugging it through the airport to the gate.

I’ve only been turned down once in 3 years - in Denver, and that’s unsurprising as everything at that airport seems designed for inconvenience!

Edit: nothing in this LPT is about convincing you to check bags. I just want others to know they can save $40+ by a reasonable ask for their own convenience when they may be forced to check the bag at the gate anyway.

Caveat: With some airlines - at some locations - not Frontier or Ryanair and not in Canada since they’re nice and offer it for free apparently.

We spend a lot of time looking at ourselves when doing our hair, make-up on, brushing teeth etc. and our self perception is affected by it, so make sure it shows the best version of yourself.

If we have harsh lighting coming from just one angle, it'll highlight lines & wrinkles, and if the lighting is very white it will also highlight any flaws.

So, make sure you've got a mirror with nice soft lighting. Light coming from different angles, not too white. That way, you'll be seeing the best version of yourself at the start and end of the day.

There are 5-minute people in your life,

there are 5-day people in your life, and

there are 20-year people in your life.

Acknowledge that the time we spend with people is mostly limited. Often, we cannot predict how much time we will spend together. But what we can do is recognize that our time with them is finite.

Treat them with that awareness. Ask them the questions you are curious about. Learn from them as if they might leave tomorrow. Share with them the things you'd like them to know. Create memories that will outlast time, and offer them kindness when they least expect it.

But don’t, don’t take their presence for granted. They could be gone tomorrow already.

Cherish.

Police can use your prints or your Face ID without a warrant. They cannot force you to enter the code. To disable biometric ID on an iPhone press the power and a volume button concurrently for about two seconds.

Very useful when traveling! Turn the shower to max heat and leave your garment in the shower or bathroom. In about 15 minutes it will have much less wrinkling.

Most life insurance, retirement accounts, and other financial accounts allow you to add one or more “beneficiaries” to your account—someone who automatically gets the money if you die. This is important because it allows your kids, spouse, or whoever else you want to get access to the money immediately, without having to wait to see what’s in a will or fight it out in court. And you don’t need a will or a lawyer or a notary; for most accounts, it’s probably something you can do online with a few clicks in a few minutes. But after you do it, it’s also important to check your beneficiaries periodically; beneficiary designations usually trump instructions in a will or other legal rules about inheritance. So, for example, if you name your spouse as a beneficiary on your retirement account and then end up getting divorced and remarried—but forget to update your beneficiary—spouse #2 could be in for a unhappy surprise if you die.

Most of the time just the couch itself was designed by the guy who thinks everyone wants a giant hard bar in their spine, but the mattress on the floor is not.

If you tend to procrastinate, set it a few days or a week ahead (e.g., on May 1st on your calendar, note that you need to cancel your free trial by May 8th). Since those services often send a confirmation email with a "cancel here" link, it's handy to paste that link in, too.

If you're constantly forgetting your keys, phone, or wallet when you leave the house, here’s a super simple fix:

Before you leave, touch every single item you need. Call it your “last touch” checklist

Doesn't matter how well off you are compared to someone else.

Time treats all of us the same.

Don't let yourself become alone.

Don't give up your life in hope it'll be better when you're older.

Do the best you can now.

For any new parents or parents who haven't done this already, make a family password with your children. Your child is suppose to ask for the family password whenever an unfamiliar adult claims to be friends with the parents and wants the child to travel with the stranger. It can be as simple or complicated as the child is comfortable with, but something they can remember.

For example, the child should ask something like: what's the family password, or even more discretely, what's my favorite animal? The answer is suppose to be a rehearsed response, like Green or Baboon.

And it is key to practice, these action with your child every so often so they know how to react and behave in those situations.

Of course you should also be discussing how a child should handle emergency situations should they come up like fires, an bad injury, or damaged property. But starting the family password when they are able to talk and comprehend right from wrong is when to start these life lessons.

I think I need advice or lpt on how to stop dreading work daily. I've been looking for other jobs but they don't pay as much and I can't financially afford a pay cut so I'm kind of stuck here for now.

I tried figuring out what causes the dread and I can't pinpoint it exactly because it's an accumulation of various things such as: there's a lack of comadrie and socialization (we do remote work and don't do the same projects as each other anymore so there's no real reason to talk to each other), annoying and difficult coworkers, meetings only consist of sales talks and Financials (most employees aren't involved in sales and financial performance so it makes no sense to talk to us about it constantly), I don't enjoy the work we do (the type if service has changed since covid) and the company is all about performance and efficiency. Employees aren't responsible for getting new clients but managers are and right now is a slow period but executives keep harping on managers about the downtime and employees are worried they'll wanna lay people off.

Those are some of the reasons and I guess what it comes down to is there is nothing to look forward to at work. What they call fun perks isn't really fun. While there's some good things about the job most of the stuff that I looked forward to they no longer offer.

But like I said I'm stuck here for now but I dread work and i hate that I dread work.

You'll be able to look back on memories associated with the thing in question, without having a useless thing taking up space in your house.

Perhaps you still have a game console or computer still in your closet, that you're struggling to let go of due to those memories of games you played on it.

First of all a dash camera is a very wise investment these days, there are entire subs full of videos that probably made life a lot easier for the driver after an accident. Although there are countless styles and brands available with a litany of features, there is one oft-overlooked factor that's important to take into account.

It is entirely possible for the car's electrical power to be cut immediately during an accident, but it's important for the camera to keep running briefly to record the event in it's entirety. There are two ways this is done, one is with a small rechargeable battery that takes over after the power stops, and the other is by using a large capacitor that stores enough of a charge to keep things running for those crucial few seconds. What you pick depends primarily on one major factor...heat. If you live in the South with brutally hot summers most of the year round, that can shorten the life of the rechargeable battery significantly, especially if the car is left outside uncovered most of the time. If that's the case then capacitors are the way to go as they are much more heat resistant.

There are actually a lot of advantages to capacitor-equipped cameras, durability and reliability among others, the only real advantage of battery-equipped cams is sometimes they'll run a bit longer without power and of course...cost. Overall spending a few extra bucks for the capacitor is a wise investment, especially if you use the AC a lot more than the heater.

Side note: Don't go cheap on the micro-SD card either, for much the same reasons. The best bet is a name brand "high-endurance" card especially designed for harsh environments. Nothing sucks more than to try to access that video that will save your insurance premiums only to get "file unreadable".

Working in bars myself, we always have a hoard of lost property umbrellas. I've taken to asking other bars and they do the same. Ask them if they have one in lost property, tell them when you're done with it you'll leave it in another pub to allow someone else in the same situation use it when they're caught out. (I'm from Inverness and I've literally just done this in liverpool - folk always leave umbrellas!)

If you're an American not sure what all you're voting for, download a sample ballot ahead of time so you can avoid confusion when confronted with ballot initiatives, judges, or whatever else you may not have been expecting to see and haven't researched how to vote. Ballotpedia can help you out here.

Or, you can google 'sample ballot 2024 [your location]' if Ballotpedia is missing yours for some reason.

You can bring a "cheat sheet" with you into the polling booth (but some states won't let you bring your phone, so paper notes are the surer bet).

Early voting has already started in many states.

ETA: Young people especially often don't vote because they don't feel they know enough to vote well. Downloading a sample ballot ahead of time allows ample opportunity to research candidates and issues and be an informed voter. This really is a useful tip!

This LPT comes from an ex British SAS soldier I worked with on a security contract in Afghanistan. He described being a consultant to the BBC in Iraq, escorting a journalist to an Iraqi hospital where some locals had been injured in fighting, and being confronted by a crowd of unruly locals. He was unarmed.

"You look for someone in the crowd who seems like they might have some authority -older, better dressed- and who seems like they're not as worked up as everyone else. Make eye contact with that person and try to convey "help me out here". You may only be able to use body language, but you're basically looking at that one person and trying to get them to intercede on your behalf."

He said it worked. Considering the alternative of getting torn to pieces, it probably can't hurt to try,

First off, I know no one in their right mind reads IRS forms if they don't have to. Bear with me. Making an exception here is worth it. The form is long-ish but it's simple to hit "page down" a few times and ignore the irrelevant stuff.

Why do it at all? Because a unfortunately large percentage of charities (even some well ranked by charity-ranking sites) are awful. Huge expenditures for administrative salaries instead of for charitable programs. Huge expenditures for marketing/fundraising but not the programs themselves. Revenues pouring in but being accumulated (why?) instead of spent.

The forms are available online by searching "[charity name] 990".

Another note: IRS form 990 is (obviously) a US form but many non-US charities also fill it out.

Water damage happens, it sucks but it's a part of life.

It's helpful to have many towels to be able to soak up water when a leak happens.

The buckets useful for if you have a slow leak and need time to go get stuff to fix it.
