Article by Steven Aquino

An excerpt follows:

For sporting events like the Olympics and Paralympics, ... it’s paramount the (audio describer) be knowledgeable of the sport they’re describing; the quality would be otherwise sullied if the describer didn’t, for example, know the intricacies of basketball or anything else. The information conveyed has to be delivered with the proper context behind it in order for a Blind or low vision person to visualize a moment in their mind.

Sorry for the editorialised title, but I figured people would appreciate it more than the uninformative clickbait title on the original video "Have Uncovered an Olympics Mystery..."

Would love suggestions for a better title of the Lemmy post.

This is a map of how many times the Olympics games have been, or will be held in each country of the world.

Personally I would like to see Iceland tackle the challenge of infrastructure, I'm sure they would find elegant and minimalist solutions for each sport, without compromising their beautiful nature. It would be interesting to see athletes adapt to permanent daylight in summer. And cynically, it would expose the atrocious state of their housing market, and maybe prompt some change ?

Is it just me or did this feel very derivative of the James Bond skit at the opening ceremony of the 2012 London games?

The Paris 2024 team is made up of 37 talented athletes – 13 of them are women – competing in 12 different sports. They're a team born from circumstance and opportunity. Their existence signifies hope, belonging and inclusion.

Despite the attempts of the IOC to claim that they do not want to be political, the reality is that sport is and will always be political. The existence of the EOR points to global unrest and politics as one of the complex layers why the team exists.
