Up until now I had exclusively used it for playing roguelites, as they just feel so darn good on a handheld device. I can put them down whenever, short satisfying runs, and the gameplay loop just fits perfectly. It’s kind of like Switch that I used to fiddle around with a whole lot more — except better, plain and simple. More games, and better games across the board. But my latest fascination - in fact the main genre I started gaming on the deck - are the so called “boomer shooters” or I guess retro shooters if you wanna get technical about it. They’re also straight to the point, no nonsense and get me my daily dopamine shot. And in my case specifically, they’re a genre I just never touched much on PC ever since… the early 2000s when I was a kid lol

Like I said, they’re pretty much the only type of game I’m blasting when I take my deck with me anywhere but especially when I take a hit off my pipe and just wanna lie back in my bed and no-brain something satisfying. My main dopamine shots are currently these shooters

  • Cultic – It’s like Dusk except better. It’s a more difficult game overall but you can pull of some crazy moves by sliding and using the environment. The game ain’t as long as Dusk but the atmosphere, music, and enemies are spot on. Each zone is very distinct and the pacing has a really nice tempo to it, although it takes maybe half an hour to get back into the “zone” when I put the game down for a day
  • SULFUR – Came across this recently and only played the free demo on Steam (full release is next Monday it seems) and it got my attention b/c it combines the classic shooter design with some RPG-lite elements and meshes it all into a roguelite kind of loop. Pretty difficult at start too, but very addictive once you clear your first run and only gets better. Lots of weapons, lots of items, gets intense the more you have at stake and comic in a dark-comic sorta way. Looking forward to how the full game will play for sure
  • Prodeus – I want to call this game the Duke Nukem “that should have been”. Beautiful game, pretty to look it, lots of interactions throughout all levels, straightforward story and the option to switch between the “modern” look and pixelated (I play on the second b/c just feels right). Not a lot to say except that it slaps, it’s also what I’d call the poor-man’s DOOM except that’s an equally good alternative imho

So… anyone else enjoying boomer shooters here as much as me right now? If yes, what games you playing?

I was always a console gamer all the way to 2023 when i got my first pc and now own a pc and an oled deck. I always got hyped for AAA games the most , but latley I might get hyped for 2-3 a years mostly. I still love halo, borderlands, doom , diablo, etc. But in the past year I realized I get way more hyped for smaller games and even their dlc. There's something incredible to be able to get dozens or even hundreds of hours of pure joy out of a couple dollars of price. I always remember this quote "price is what you pay, value what you get" and games like brotato, factorio, risk of rain, binding of isaac , stardew valley, it's mindblowing that for so little money we get so much, free updates , and this smaller teams aren't predatory, sell us hype on trailers to then give terrible and unfinished products. I believe the indie development really respects us and i really like that. This friday we get Black ops 6 which I might pick up , it's a big if , on the other hand, I can't wait to pick up brotato dlc this friday as well!

Have you ever felt like this? Thanks for reading and please share your experinece / opinion :)

I've been a gamer my whole life but lately, I've been feeling like I'm in a rut. I get home, play with my kid and hang out with my wife, then play games usually from 8-11. The problem is, I'm so tired from the day that I feel like my mind doesn't want to deal with complex games with a long story and difficult puzzles during this time. I play some League of Legends and Final Fantasy 14 because I've been playing those games for so long that it doesn't feel complicated to me anymore but I struggle to play story intensive games or overly complicated games.

Can I get some recommendations for some non-intensive games to play at night before bed? I have a Steam Deck so I can play that while I watch some TV relaxing, dock it to my TV, or Sunshine/Moonlight to my Steam Deck from my PC.

EDIT: I've already played a ton of Stardew Valley and Vampire Survivors.

EDIT 2: Wow lots of suggestions. I'll have to wade through all the suggestions when I get home and double back let people know what I decided to dive into.

I've been getting alot of messages on how to install the plugin now that it has been delisted. So I just wanted to make a quick post for reddit so that users here can easily update their plugins whenever they want to. There is now 2 desktop files. On for desktop and one simply for the plugin if you have decky loader. Here is the link to get you started, please read it carefully so you are aware of new functionality as well! You simply run one or the other depending on how you plan on using NSL. Once the plugin is installed the plugin itself can actually be used in desktop mode as well as long as the auto scanner is on! Happy gaming!!

What are yall using to comfortably play your SteamDeck while laying down, without having your arms fall asleep?

My arms get tired after like 30-45 mins of holding it so I can see while laying down.

I’d love something to hold my SteamDeck upright, while I use a controller instead.

Anybody here have something that’s worked for them?

Edit: thank you everyone for the suggestions, both for the SteamDeck and my personal fitness.

…just to completely pass out as soon as I got to my hotel room and never touch the Deck.

Anyone else have their backlog installed with the best of intentions just to leave it mostly untouched? 😂

All week I have been mulling over purchasing a 1TB OLED version of the deck. The only thing holding me back is if I already own a good gaming PC and an Xbox Series X and PS5 for gaming on the couch, would it be a regretful purchase? I am considering purchasing one because the idea of playing my Steam games handheld on the couch *SEEMS* insane. Also, the ability to dock if I want to play a game on my OLED TV is cool, too.

I just wanted to get people's perspectives on if they are in a similar situation, and how they've enjoyed (or) regretted their purchase.
