That's a self-reinforcing argument though. As climate change gets worse because of use of "cheap" energy from fossil fuels, temperatures and weather events will get more extreme. Which then can be used as justification to continue using those energy sources to cope short-term with the damage they exacerbate long-term.
Also, note that renewables are way cheaper than fossil energy sources. If they are available of course. Available as in "built and working". Even with storage costs factored in they are cheaper.
