Highly recommend getting involved locally. Worst thing that happens is you make no real leeway politically but meet some cool people

Some of the coolest people I have met were locals who volunteer for the food bank and stuff like that. Not expressly political but benefits the community. They give a shit and that gives me hope in humanity.
