That's what happens when you hire Stanley Kubrick to stage your moon landing video. The guy's such a perfectionist, he insisted on shooting on location.
Stanley Kubrick started the Apollo program, designed and built rockets and trained astronauts just so he could fly to the moon to stage a fake moon landing video on the moon. That's dedication.
Making it a Hollywood production is probably also the reason it was so crazy expensive.
