MAL for anime
Trakt for anything. Fully usable without any premium account.
Upside of Trakt: If you like watch analytics it's very cool, does support backups to cloud providers like onedrive and gdrive and I believe via email so you arent bound to them if you want to quit.

Happy user for >2 years.
There are also integrations for Jellyfin and Plex.

Alternative to self host: https://github.com/FuzzyGrim/Yamtrack
Havent tried it out yet

I have this problem KissAnime shutdown and lost half of the list. Personally decided back then to do it manually on Excel.

Took a bit of time but very much worth it (imo). No stress of losing it due to shutdowns. It’s also easy to track how many shows you watched, dropped or want to watch because of the formulas you can use within Excel.

Man, this is how i find out? RIP Aniwave

Hmm... You could try Trakt but I find that it's very weird about anime. I use Anilist for anime/manga and Trakt for TV/movies because of this.

I keep track of shows with https://next-episode.net

Never having used aniwave, I can't say how it compares.

I wish someone made Bookwyrm fork/clone but only for anime/manga. I don't really have expertise for something like this, but maybe I can try to create something while learning about it as I go on?

MAL/Anilist + Mihon (formerly Tachiyomi)

I was just thinking if a self hostable tracking solution was possible. Right now, I use MALSync on Firefox. Used to use Tachiyomi, but stopped after they discontinued and tracking on Browder with an extension just feels faster. BTW, just in case, there's an app called Miru (and a fork Migu) that has built-in auto tracking with anilist.

There is one: Yamtrack

Regarding Tachiyomi: The successor is called Mihon and is continued by one of the former maintainers

Never track your shows, movies and games on just one service. Always have backups. For example I use TVTime, Simkl and IMDB for TV and movies, and MAL,AniTrend,Simkl for anime, HLTB and Stash for games.

Do you use an extension that automatically updates what was the last episode you watched?

I don't , I do it manually, but that being said if you watch using Stremio, Jellyfin, Plex then I guess radarr, sonarr all those things can do that for you. I never used any of those so I could be wrong. I just download the torrents directly and manually track them.
