I just wanted to define the middle mouse button to insert clipboards content - but then I mentioned that #KDE already did that for me! πŸ˜€

What a (certainly widely known) gamechanger! 😍

And by the way: What a great #distribution KDE is day by day! πŸ₯°

Does KDE not have the middle mouse button paste from the primary selection? I thought the clipboard is distinct from primary selection.

'Insert clipboard's contents' sounds like a fancy way of saying paste πŸ€·πŸ»β€β™‚οΈ

Paste from clipboard is different than paste from primary selection

You are correct. Traditional X middle-button behavior is to insert the primary selection, from any application. It is distinct from the cilpboard(s), has no "copy" step, and doesn't behave the same as "paste" (it can't paste over another primary selection).

Many people don't notice the difference, though, especially if they're used to an environment that lacks that functionality, like Windows. Some might even get confused or frustrated when the middle click doesn't work quite as they expect (which, of course, is because it's actually doing something different).

It's also possible that OP remapped their middle button to paste from the clipboard, although their phrasing makes it seem unlikely.

@ericjmorey Oh you're right! Thanks for this clarification! πŸ‘Œ

Wow but that's an even better feature (didn't think that was possible) because for a lot of cases the clipboard is used for primary selections and then it isn't neccessary to take the detour via copy or cut (while you could go that way though) - that's fantastic! 😍

Judging by the tags, is this originally a Mastodon post? Trying to figure out how all this works

the [@] kde [@] [domain name] parts at the bottom of the post body tells a Mastodon server to notify the Lemmy services about the post and Lemmy shows that post as part of the community so subscribers and people browsing all will have the post in their front page feed depending on their sort settings.
