Discussion of climate, how it is changing, activism around that, the politics, and the energy systems change we need in order to stabilize things.

As a starting point, the burning of fossil fuels, and to a lesser extent deforestation and release of methane are responsible for the warming in recent decades: Graph of temperature as observed with significant warming, and simulated without added greenhouse gases and other anthropogentic changes, which shows no significant warming

How much each change to the atmosphere has warmed the world: IPCC AR6 Figure 2 - Thee bar charts: first chart: how much each gas has warmed the world. About 1C of total warming. Second chart: about 1.5C of total warming from well-mixed greenhouse gases, offset by 0.4C of cooling from aerosols and negligible influence from changes to solar output, volcanoes, and internal variability. Third chart: about 1.25C of warming from CO2, 0.5C from methane, and a bunch more in small quantities from other gases. About 0.5C of cooling with large error bars from SO2.

Recommended actions to cut greenhouse gas emissions in the near future:

Reminds me of that scene in Interstellar where a baseball game is interrupted by a dust storm. Some interesting world-building in that scene regarding the state of the game too.

It'll be fine, just install retractable roofs on the stadiums (at the taxpayers' expense of course), and air condition the whole field. You'll have to leave a gap at the back for home runs but it's ok if some air conditioning escapes, the taxpayers are paying to cool down the neighborhood!

Who cares about baseball?

Isn't it like 3 of 4 countries who play it?

You should take a moment and think about the world population. 8 billion people. Really just try and wrap your head around how big of a number that is. Once you've sat there for a good while, reflect on just how small your worldview is.

Here's a hint to get you started:

One million seconds is about 11.5 days. One billion seconds is about 31 years and 8 months.

Have fun and try to learn something 🤙

It's an incredibly fun and popular sport and the World Series just ended.

Articles like this are good at highlighting that nothing sacred is safe from climate change.

If a couple dozen people read the article from a baseball fan's perspective and suddenly it clicks for them, it's a win.

Yes and one of those countries that does care about baseball is very naughty when it comes to its climate change contributions though. It can still be potent to tune the threat for whatever will motivate your target. For instance, the British would be stirred to action vigorously if you threatened to take away their tea and thinly veiled class system.
