Just joined after rif went down. Are there any good videos or tutorials for people new to Lemmy and the fediverse?

It’s pretty simple.

  1. Lemmy is a collection of topic-based communities.
  2. People share what they find interesting to the appropriate community.
  3. People who subscribe to the community vote up posts that are on topic and vote down posts that aren’t. They can also leave a comment to discuss the submission.
  4. Posts are sorted by votes/comments so that people see popular ones.

Have fun and participate as much or as little as you want.

These TWO things will vastly improve your experience...

1 - Subscribe to high-quality communities…

The best way to explore communities is: https://lemmyverse.net/communities

  • click the “house” icon (top-right), and input your home instance (aussie.zone).

  • now explore ALL those searchable communities, and open them to Subscribe.

2 - Get a good mobile app. It solves all the federation/UI issues.

  • are you on iOS or Android? (or primarily PC?)
  • I will send you more info accordingly

Thanks for the info. I'm using Connect on android.

Connect is a good choice, based on the recent Which android app is best thread.

Here are some cool communities to check out:

And if you want some more ‘general chat’ options:

Building a high-quality Subscription feed is the secret...

then you can change your app's default Sort to 'Subscribed' and 'New' (in settings), and you'll always see content that matches your real interests (no filler).

Feel free to respond or ask anything.

I don’t think so, but in what direction do you have questions? Glad to help where I can.
