They're P2 in the constructors and Toto can't help himself but to trash talk the work of his engineers all the time. No surprise everyone wants to leave and rather join McLaren and Aston instead.

He's not trash talking then tho?

He's just saying it's baffling and feels bad. I'm sure the team shares the same feeling

If you seriously think that way, you've been ignoring all the comments he made since last year.

Iโ€™m sure the team shares the same feeling

There's a difference between striving to be better and insulting the work of the employees, especially when he personally had the last word when talking about pursuing the 2022 concept into 2023 as he is 1/3 owner and boss of Mercedes motorsport.

The current generation of F1 is largely about tire management and the current car seems to be all over the place with tire wear. Some weekends it's relatively kind on the tires with reasonable pace and some weekends it rivals Ferrari on tire wear. Combined with the extremely narrow setup window the car is too inconsistent to fight at the front.

The season's nearly over, and they still haven't grasped their car.

At the start, seeing Mercedes struggle, I thought they'd recover and outdevelop their car, being Mercedes and all. Boy, was I wrong.

They did. Theyโ€™re P2 in the constructors, well ahead of both Aston and McLaren.

But they are P2 because of the inconsistency of others and not because of any car advantage. Infact I struggle to remember any race where merc were the 2nd fastest team.

You can't be P2 overall with a car that's all shit.

And where did I say that having the 3rd fastest car on average means that the car is shit. I am just saying that they have not recovered any pace over the others. The gap to red bull is same as it was at the start of the season. In the first 8 races, Aston was consistently faster than them with Ferrari being faster or slower depending on the track. Now McLaren is faster than them with Ferrari being faster or slower depending on the track

Toto Wolff said that and that was what my comment was about.

And I was talking in the context of the original comment in this thread which said that OP expected merc to outdevelop others and how that has not happened. You said that has happened(or atleast that merc recovered which considering the gaps to the other teams is more or less the same is not true) and that is why they are P2 and I disagreed with you. Hopefully we are on the same page now

Agreed, if aston/mclaren is consistent next year merc looking at p3. Worst part is their upgrades have rarely resulted in consistent improvement, and it seems they still have no real clue on how to make a leap that gets them ahead.
