Data Hoarder

We are digital librarians. Among us are represented the various reasons to keep data -- legal requirements, competitive requirements, uncertainty of permanence of cloud services, distaste for transmitting your data externally (e.g. government or corporate espionage), cultural and familial archivists, internet collapse preppers, and people who do it themselves so they're sure it's done right. Everyone has their reasons for curating the data they have decided to keep (either forever or For A Damn Long Time (tm) ). Along the way we have sought out like-minded individuals to exchange strategies, war stories, and cautionary tales of failures.

I am planning to get this case Rosewill RSV-L4600U 4U and run a server with Unraid on it. This server will run 6 drives (all shucked, none SMR). I also wanted to run a ZFS VM with 8 drives being passed through.

Will the 14 drives running at once in this enclosure cause issues (since these are all shucked and I have read that vibration may cause issues).

My current ZFS host is running in a separate 3U case but I wanted to consolidate everything into a single server. Are there any concerns ?

It will work as you describe with no issues: vibration won't be a problem. Use large/slow case fans (and even for the CPU consider a 92mm model if 120mm won't fit) and it should serve you well for years. Good luck!

I have two of these both full. No issues in 3-4 years

I have the same case been using it for about 5 years. I have only WD drives in there and it doesn't vibrate at all whatsoever. Almost all of the drives are shucked and there are 14.

Thanks for your reply. I will get the case and consolidate those two into a single server.

Yes. Always protect your investment against earthquakes by placing them in a place from which they can not easily fall.

They are two different datasets, with 2 backups for each (not in the same rack). I just don't like running a ZFS server separately.
