MODERATORS

Those of you who've been around in the fediverse a while longer, is there any established etiquette specific to Lemmy as opposed to the normal behavior in places like Reddit? I've been a Mastodon user for several years and I'm aware of how norms differ over there, so just wondering if this corner of fedi has anything similar.

I would say in general no matter which Lemmy instance, be conscious of using others' server and hosting space.

For example, don't "comment to save for later". Don't upload unnecessarily large photos/media, but you can obviously link to images/video from your own server or elsewhere on the 'net.

Try to engage more with discussions where they are genuine, try to stay away from Redditisms that don't add anything like saying "this", singing lyrics in comment chains, shitposts and copypasta in non-meme communities or where it's not called for.

The rest are dependent on the rules and philosophies of the Lemmy servers and communities you visit. Read them and follow them as best you can.

The links in the sidebar here in the Support forum are a good start on etiquette specific to Beehaw - which I think is probably more important (or even possible) than trying to come up with some overall standard for the diverse servers in the entire fediverse.

Did you have specific areas of concern that aren't addressed in the philosophy posts?

No, I had a readthrough of all that before joining to make sure I'd be a good fit here. I was more just curious if there was often-seen Lemmy culture in general as there is on many Mastodon instances :)

Thank you!

Basically: don’t be a dick

If you accidentally are a dick in a comment and people tell you so, apologize. Have the courage to be kind.
