On this day in 1970, a spontaneous uprising against U.S. military occupation broke out in Koza, Okinawa, Japan after an American drunk driver struck a local pedestrian. Approximately 60 Americans and 27 Okinawans were injured, and dozens of cars with American license plates were torched.

Following Japan's defeat in World War II, the country was occupied by Allied forces and governed under martial law. While most of Japan regained its independence in April 1952, the Okinawa Prefecture was to remain under U.S. military occupation for another twenty years.

Prior to the events of December 20th, three Americans had been acquitted via court martial after striking and killing an Okinawa civilian. This incident fueled the growing discontent of Okinawans with the standard status of forces that exempted U.S. servicemen from Okinawan justice.

On December 20th, 1970, a drunk U.S. serviceman struck an Okinawan pedestrian in the city of Koza. A crowd quickly surrounded the car and the policemen who had arrived, demanding that this incident not also be swept under the rug.

When American MPs arrived and attempted to pull the driver away, the protest turned violent, with thousands gathering to try to prevent the driver from leaving. By the end of the night, dozens of cars with American license plates had been torched and approximately 60 Americans and 27 Okinawans had been injured.

got my final presentation grade actually bumped up for having a line about being too busy to make finishing touches because it was presented the day after kissinger died and I was too busy celebrating packwatch

β€œBonus points for the Kissinger line, which was definitely the most memorable line of the Nov 30 evening. Side note, I mentioned that to a few friends after the presentation and one said to me, β€˜I think that kid is going to go far.’”

I can't remember if I've brought it up before now, but guys, my father died earlier this year, and I'm still having a hard time dealing with it. I feel like such shit about the way that I cared for him in the end. He didn't have anybody else but me, and I feel like I was so inadequate. He was a mean old son of a bitch who did a tour during Vietnam and impregnated an 18 year old girl at age 59. He wasn't a good man, and as much as old habits want me to say that I'm being dramatic when I tell you this, I don't think it's unfair to say that he emotionally and psychologically abused me for years. But he held me and loved me and drove me to school, took me to museums and helped me learn to read and to drive and to conduct myself in life. His retirement pay certainly helped me out of a few jams as well, I'm not too proud to admit that. He was my rock in a lot of ways, as much as he was a burden on me emotionally. Damn me, but I don't blame him for any of it, and I just start weeping any time I dedicate more than a moment's thought to the situation. I already lost my mom when I was 16, and now I've lost him too, and I'm not even out of my twenties. The whole thing just makes me deeply sad.

You all aren't my therapists, and I don't expect sympathy, or even a response, I'm just drunk and emotional and needed to get that off my chest, and I thank you profusely for allowing me to do that.

I love seeing non-hexbear users talking to each other on our megathreads. It's like when you're at your friend's house the morning after a party and talking to all of their friends who you've never met before

When you find a random electrician to do a simple fucking job in the bathroom that normally takes 5 to 10 minutes at best, but then his buffoonery leads to him drilling in the wall where he shouldn't for absolutely no reason, piercing the water pipe, and you end up needing to get a plumber and a tiler to fix the entire mess he caused. agony-consuming

I have approximately 19 hours before my exam tomorrow. I have 8 hours of lectures to watch (at 2 time speed, there are 16 hours total). I have never seen about half of these lectures because I didn't show up. So essentially I must learn a semester's worth of material in less than 24 hours. Lol lmao

if you play the game 'how many links until i find anticommunist propaganda' on tvtropes its hard to get a score higher than 1 or 2.

went from wondering about the origins of the possibly transphobic cartoon stereotype of the 'overly manly unattractive german/eastern european woman' trope (Brawn Hilde in tvtropes lingo) and found 'real life' examples of the related 'The Baroness' trope such as a wholesome smol bean imperial japanese POW of russia drawing unflattering pictures of the women guards, comparing cold war bulgarian prison guards to concentration camp guards, and attempts to downplay the USSR's relative lack of sexism in their military (they barely had any feeemale soldiers! it only seemed like a lot because it was more than 0! us civilized euros would never make feeeeeeeeemales fight in wars!)

i'm never using the non-hexbear internet again

I understand why unions push seniority based hiring to combat nepotism in hiring practices but goddamn is it frustrating having to learn a new job every year because someone more senior than me applied for my contract. Especially when it forces me to engage with the soul crushing act of "networking" because there's no guarantee of me getting another contract unless someone hires my antisocial ass. I can see why new hires can get a bad taste for unions if they're not engaged with the politics of contract negotiations and their only exposure is this

Bugger my life, 10 months of waiting later and the NHS finally choose to call about my blood tests for HRT while I'm out Christmas shopping.

There were people at home, but they might as well've been a chocolate teapot for all they could help in the circumstances what with not having a clue about anything going on an' all.

The NHS would've been able to reach me on my mobile if they hadn't lost the number for the third time this year.

There's a letter coming in the post now though. And I'm happy that I'm closer to getting my anticistamines/antiboyotics/titty skittles/[other joke name for oestrogen]. party-blob

this fucking country i swear

i was driving home as per usual tonight and i saw on the side of the off ramp there was a homeless guy with a sign begging for money. i had to do a double take because it was 11:30 at night but yeah, this guy was still begging for money at nearly midnight. I can't really explain why that's so heartbreaking for me but there was something about it that really hit me wrong.

god damn this country
