Having clearly had my teenage years at around the same time as the OP, I can confirm this is a very realistic simulation.
Except for the inevitable horror you'd get when the image did finish loading, but it turned out to be a bait 'n switch.
We had less to work with in those days, but we made do dammit!

I had a scam involving that- I would download porn pics from the internet at campus computer labs (I was still in high school, but it was hard to stop anyone who wanted to from using the labs, especially at 2 am) and then upload them to BBSes and I'd get a huge ratio and be able to download a shit ton of games.
