Yes, it really does!

Since my post yesterday, lemmy.world has added about new 2600 users, bringing the user count to 28361 users. It's the clear second-largest lemmy instance out there and quickly closing in on lemmy.ml's 36k users (not taking new signups).

Interestingly, third-largest lemmy instance beehaw.org seems to have lost about 275 users since yesterday. Guessing some people were pissed off about its defederation enough to delete their beehaw accounts?

Some might argue that one instance dominating is against the whole Fediverse idea, but I disagree here.

Big generic beginner-friendly instances are needed. When users first come here, mostly from Reddit, they have no clue how federation works, and telling them to join mostly empty instances isn't really helping them. Instead, the advantage of big instances is that at least, even if the users don't get the federation concept yet, they'd still have tens of thousands of local users with whom they can interact until they naturally figure it out themselves.

Think of it as the equivalent of having Gmail and Hotmail in the email space. They are huge and are clearly dominating the email space, but they also serve as decent entry points for users who will then later maybe find the time to look for more options.

Agreed. Having a stable landing place like lemmy.world with lots of local content for new users to get comfortable before spreading out to other instances doesn’t defeat the purpose of federation. Why would I want to join a place that seems to barely have any activity at first glance? The federated content is not immediately apparent to new casual users.

The fact that Lemmy can federate is an advantage on its own, even if in practice we mostly don't. A federated Reddit wouldn't have had to resort to the blackout; users could have spun up their own instances, defederated from the central instance, and carried on, cutting the problematic management out with very little actual loss to the rest of the community. Even if a single instance ends up dominating, the possibility of federation is a big win for users.

I completely agree. I can suggest this instance and know that most people will find a place and have a similar experience.

Get ready for a larger influx on July 1st

[–] [email protected] 12 points 1 year ago

Yeah, I can’t wait for that. Hopefully the servers/instances are ready.

July 1st most API driven 3rd party stuff gets shut down because of exorbitant API charges.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Didn't know it was such a fast turnaround.

Literally crazy!

[–] [email protected] 7 points 1 year ago

That’s part of why the 3rd party’s are shutting down. Should’ve been a year transition.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 1 year ago (1 children)

That's when Reddit will change their API pricing and some third-party apps like Apollo will shut down.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 year ago

Didn't know it was such a fast turn around for that, damn!

One of the reasons I picked this community instance was reading about their finances and how they were positioned for the long run. I plan to contribute: money and content. I want to see the community thrive.

Excellent news! It's so lovely to see lemmy.world and the threadiverse as a whole grow. It's only gonna get bigger from July 1st

I would like to know how they managed to register. I tried since Monday, kept getting the spinning circle on the Submit button, and finally created an account on another server.

I just made this account two min ago, no issues.

I just tried again and still cannot get past the Sign Up screen. Odd.
