The official answer seems to be: CIG trying to get as many people to the Manchester office and he may or may not be unwilling to relocate. That's just my guess though.

GamesIndustry has additional comment from CIG on the matter.

For what it's worth, he's been replaced by Richard Tyrer (director of Squadron 42).

What’s this “hit with layoffs “ phrasing about? CI have chosen to lay off workers.

Title was copied from the article, it seemed roughly in line with other reporting on the job losses

I’m not taking a shot at you, but the soft language being used across the industry.

“Oh, we’ve been hit by layoffs!? How could this unexpected event have occurred?”

Decided to leave instead of uproot their entire family, get visas, and move halfway around the world for a video game.

Yeah Roberts is a "visionary", but there'd have to be a nice fat line of cash in my bank account to go through with something like that.

100% agreed. Nobody could be blamed for not wanting to relocate for a job and it's honestly kinda ridiculous in this day and age that they're requiring them to. Remote work works!

They're also hiring 40 people at the moment:

Mostly around the Manchester area.
