I believe secure boot must be disabled as the Nvidia drivers aren't signed for it. You can install the drivers with it enabled but secure boot will prevent them from being loaded at boot up.

I wouldn't say it's better in terms of features or polish. In that regard it still has quite a ways to go. However it is certainly better in terms of freeing yourself from Google and being in control of your own photo library. I've been using it since late last year and for my needs it's honestly been great!

After 30mins of inactivity my account locks and my screens blank. Few seconds after that my monitors go to standby. That's it. I never shutdown unless something necessitates it and I only really reboot for updates if they require it. My PC basically stays on 24/7 and I've never had any issues. Current build has parts all the way back from 2015/2016 with no failures to speak of.
