I think what you're describing is Songza and it was great as a service. 8Tracks has been pretty decent as well.

I'm excited for my pre-order with the green variant. Want to see how well it pairs with my Sony ARIV-A and how well it does video and photo on its own in those cases I didn't carry by camera.
