I've seen nook glowlights for as little as $10. As for where to obtain epubs or pdfs I recommend:

Support your local library they will often have ebooks you can "check out"
Anna's Archive scrapes internet databases for ebooks, newspapers, magazines etc
Royal Road - A user ranked list of works that are updated constantly. Use webtoepub to convert the books to epubs. I think Super Supportive may be my favorite book of all time! Super Minion, Re: Trailer Trash, and A Practical Guide to Sorcery are a few more of my favorites.
If you're willing to resort to piracy there are of course many more options

Once you get your epubs, pdfs, comics, etc adding them to your device can be a pain especially for Kindle users. I recommend Calibre for managing your ebooks and transferring them to your e-reader.
