Hmm. Any insights as to why this is different than a franchise tag? This feels a bit underwhelming

I agree. FT is 10M and forces the Giants into a contract or retag (at a price hike) next year. Now they can just tag him next year for the same price and he's back to square one, but with one more year of mileage. And I guess 1M more dollars (assuming he hits every incentive).

There was talk that he might sign a contract with some sort of stipulation that they couldn’t tag him next year so that could be it.
