Oh is this why s02e03 was set in Toronto? As a Canadian I'm always surprised when I see shows set here so I figured there must be some reason.
And they can sell it for hundreds more than that on top. There's the real reason.

I think the root issue is your first two words: "Apple wants". I have and use mostly Apple devices but I will say that often when I'm feeling friction it's because of a difference between what Apple wants and what I want and them having set things up so I don't have a choice.
This feels like one of those things. Apple wants AV to be something in particular but because XR offers so many possibilities I fear their limits are going to feel extra limiting.
I think that was a comment on perception not permission.
I enjoyed the episode but agree with most of your points, especially the flashbacks. If the events had happened earlier in the episode they might have been understandable but they had just happened! Spock's little joke was pretty out of character as well.
I thought trans people were a good fit for the metaphor, given the body alterations that can be involved.
