Yes, I did see the thread. The main communities mentioned seemed to be NonCredibleDefense and MeanwhileOnGrad.

NCD is a meme community focusing around topics such as military equipment, wars, and geopolitics. They seem to have a generally pro-Western/NATO slant, which sometimes conflicts with the anti-western viewpoints held on some Lemmy servers. Left alone, they would just be posting memes about being sexually attracted to fighter jets. But because a bunch of others on Lemmy believe that such memes indicate that they are fascists and/or sociopaths, occasional drama does arise.

MeanwhileOnGrad is definitely a community that stirs some drama, I can't deny that. They post screenshots of content from lemmygrad and hexbear in order to publicize some of the extreme views that are commonly expressed within those communities. If the target were anyone other than tankies, I would probably have less tolerance for that community. However, in the context of Lemmy, where the devs and most of the original servers are extreme leftists, I am not so sympathetic to accusations of bullying. In my view, the tankie perspective is more than fairly represented already, and MeanwhileOnGrad is simply a healthy counterpoint to the pervasive bullying that is done by tankies to every other Lemmy server.

I believe with this instance the hope is for things to be discussed publicly as much as possible and for decisions to be made with the community. That can mean having tough discussions about how things impact us and it can get messy.

That's the same way we handle things on sh.itjust.works. Having a frank discussion with the community and coming to a consensus. Unfortunately on Lemmy, it seems that every server gets labeled as either tankie or fascist and frequently both, so you're in good company.

100% agree, well said

Hi, I'm sorry that you're having this experience on Lemmy. People on here can be complete assholes for no reason.

I wanted to at least apologize for removing the fediseer endorsement for this instance a couple weeks ago. At the time, I was annoyed because you were voting to defederate my instance, but I also didn't realize that it would send you a notification about it 😕. If I could turn back time I never would have done that.

Anyway, I am not a vegan myself but I support veganism and I can see that you have positive intentions with this instance. I think that it's a valuable space and component of the fediverse and I hope it continues to grow. I hold a great deal of admiration and respect for vegans, especially those who do it for ethical reasons.

I just wish everyone could get along, I'm really sorry that other people are ruining your experience here. Please let me know if any users on sh.itjust.works are harassing you and I will deal with them.

Yes

Looks pretty good though I never played.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

Most likely Yankees/Mets, but Toronto might also give it a shot. He's so expensive that only a handful of clubs will even have a chance. Dodgers probably can't afford him after paying Ohtani and Yamamoto last year.

I think from a baseball perspective, hitting in front of Judge makes the most sense for his career, but money could definitely tip the scales.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 5 days ago (2 children)

That shit was rough. Boone made some critical errors, he might be out of a job. Yankees definitely felt the pressure and didn't play their best ball.

But if Soto re-signs, they will be back in the World Series next year. Book it.

The set of environmental conditions is different in each country, and indeed for each individual human. The level of technological advancement only comprises a small piece of that picture.

Because of the recent rapid technological advances in the past century, essentially every society worldwide is struggling to adapt to the new technological landscape. But due to all of the other contributing factors, the struggle is slightly different for everyone.

Just looking at the average work hours is a miniscule people of the puzzle. How much money are people making in exchange for their time? Do they have to pay for Healthcare? What types of jobs are most common? What is the historical context of the population that has led them to this point? Were they working more or less 100 years ago? Did they have more wealth 100 years ago? What is the current rate of mental illness and disability? What is the historical and current prevalence of religion?

You could continue with questions in this vein more or less infinitely. And the answer to each question would vary substantially depending on the nation/community/individual that you chose to focus on. And each answer would potentially have an impact when trying to analyze how the current culture came about.

To answer your single hypothetical question, I think one of the primary contributing factors to the reduced working hours for many wealthy western European countries when compared to the US is the relative level of financial and social inequality along with the taxation rate. For France et all, the tax rate is significantly higher and the level of social support is correspondingly higher.

This reduces some of the necessity of working more hours, because the variability of income is reduced. If low-income people still make enough money and have enough benefits to make a decent life, they don't need to work so many hours just to survive. Also, high-income people will have a reduced incentive to work so many hours because the overall financial benefit is relatively smaller when compared to the US where you can avoid taxation to a much greater extent.

Yeah sure, I can get on board with that. I just wrote a great 500 word response that I canceled accidentally. Fml I'm too tired, I'll try to give a quick summary.

Basically, by framing it as a cultural issue that hinges on the decisions of individuals to reject the dominant culture, you're putting the focus in the wrong direction. You're essentially trying to change human nature, instead of trying to change the specific conditions that cause humans to behave this way at this specific point in time. Fighting aggressively against the entrenched cultural realities is brave but futile.

Instead of focusing on dismantling the culture that is already firmly in place, you need to change the conditions for future generations so they can have the opportunity to develop less problematic cultures. In order to do that, you need to analyze the dominant culture and understand it, but you don't necessarily need to waste all your energy fighting its manifestations. Instead, you simply try to create spaces where people can construct subcultures which are protected from the dominant culture. Eventually, if the newer cultures prove to be elegant solutions to universal human problems, they will inevitably take over.

But again, I understand and agree with what you're saying. It just only applies to a handful of people who are inherently revolutionary in mindset. For the vast majority of humans, they don't have the ability to consciously and independently reject and disentangle from the dominant culture. Thus, the ultimate solution lies in altering the material conditions of society such that the dominant culture begins to change from the inside out.

[–] [email protected] 10 points 1 week ago (5 children)

Have you considered that culture is merely the collective reaction of a group of humans to a given set of environmental conditions? I don't disagree with you, but you're needlessly simplifying the problem.

You’re willing to work a job that is an hour’s drive away because you choose to take the job.

Why did I choose to take the job? One major reason is that I have an automobile. If I didn't have the automobile, I wouldn't have been able to take the job. Culture comes about as a result of a series of incentives and motivations that shape human decisions. Change the access to technology, and you would change the culture.

You seem to believe that a solution will come from people simply choosing not to do certain things. This is partially true, but its more accurate to recognize that you need to first create the material conditions that enable people to actually have a viable choice.

It is not the technology that is the problem in this case.

It's the combination of the technology and the social structures that continually reproduce the culture that you're complaining about. If you think the culture is going to magically change without altering the material conditions first, you're gonna have a bad time.

You know what that means. Time to build a new rig 😅

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Beyond All Reason is building some pretty good momentum. It's more of a TA/Supreme Commander style RTS, so a bit different compared to Warcraft. But it's a modern RTS in active development and growing userbase, which is pretty rare over the past decade.

It wasn't an issue with Lemmy system info. It's not a vector particular to Lemmy, it was something else.

Las Meninas (Spanish for 'The Ladies-in-waiting') is a 1656 painting in the Museo del Prado in Madrid, by Diego Velázquez, the leading artist of the Spanish Baroque. It has become one of the most widely analyzed works in Western painting for the way its complex and enigmatic composition raises questions about reality and illusion, and for the uncertain relationship it creates between the viewer and the figures depicted.

The painting is believed by F. J. Sánchez Cantón to depict a room in the Royal Alcazar of Madrid during the reign of King Philip IV of Spain, and presents several figures, most identifiable from the Spanish court, captured in a particular moment as if in a snapshot. Some of the figures look out of the canvas towards the viewer, while others interact among themselves. The five-year-old Infanta Margaret Theresa is surrounded by her entourage of maids of honour, chaperone, bodyguard, two dwarfs and a dog. Just behind them, Velázquez portrays himself working at a large canvas. Velázquez looks outwards beyond the pictorial space to where a viewer of the painting would stand. In the background there is a mirror that reflects the upper bodies of the king and queen. They appear to be placed outside the picture space in a position similar to that of the viewer, although some scholars have speculated that their image is a reflection from the painting Velázquez is shown working on.

Regarding Hexbear (hexbear.net)
submitted 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) by [email protected] to c/[email protected]

I didn't want to make an announcement about this but since there seems to be some confusion (to say the least), I feel that I must.

You have almost certainly started seeing posts and comments from hexbear.net users in the past day or so. Long story short, when hexbear originally federated into Lemmy a few weeks ago, they left SJW off the list of instances they wanted to federate. A few days ago, hexbear users had a vote where they agreed to add SJW to their list of federated instances.

Myself and TheDude were informed of this vote by the hexbear admins while it was in progress. We agreed that if hexbear voted in the affirmative, we would be amenable to federation and seeing how it turns out. Now, here we are.

Hexbear is a Lemmy server that was created about 3 years ago as a new home for the former users of r/chapotraphouse. CTH was banned from reddit because they were openly calling for the deaths of slave owners, which reddit considered hate speech 🙄

Hexbear is composed of leftists of all shapes and sizes, and they also have a special sensitivity to the struggles of marginalized groups, including but not limited to LGBTQ folk, the disabled, and gingers.

Some things to know about hexbear: they removed downvotes from their platform. Therefore, they tend to make a lot of comments, because the only way to respond to something you disagree with is by commenting. This can give the impression of being brigaded, but that's not necessarily the case. Also, their custom emojis are displayed very large on other instances. This is a technical issue that will eventually be fixed.

Of the major instances, Lemmy.world, lemmy.ca, feddit.de, and beehaw.org have defederated hexbear.

SJW, Lemm.ee, and lemmy.ml are still federated with hexbear.

I hope we can all get along, but obviously that's not going to be the case. I recommend that users from either server make use of the block function as necessary. More importantly, don't intentionally go to communities on the other server and attempt to antagonize them because you have a differing political stance. Some political debate is well and good, but there is a time and a place, and if you're not sure, it's probably best to keep it on your own server.

We will be banning hexbears liberally if they come in here trying to start shit, and their admins will do the same regarding our users. Pun intended.

Bottom line: we will not be defederating from hexbear in the immediate future. I personally believe they are a valuable asset to this platform, and I urge you all to give them a chance to contribute positively. If you find them annoying, just block them and/or report them; they are subject to the same rules of conduct as everyone else.

Please direct any comments and concerns to this thread, or to the Agora.
