that explains, the cpu should be on the motherboard, not on your hand

Get a load of Federico Faggin over here!

That is a hell of a reference.

Well yeah that isn't optimal but I doubt the PC will run any faster. If you were reaching thermal throttling temperatures with that paste you probably will hit them even after replacing the paste. Do you have a program like HWinfo that could monitor the temps and log if you're hitting the throttle limit?

That is a processor with some very dried-out looking thermal compound on it. I had to deal with a similar situation today on a machine I was working on.

Did you lick the old paste off the CPU like it was filling on an Oreo?

As is tradition.

I bought a GPU off ebay that had thermal paste like this, the pads were also worn as fuck. New thermal paste, new pads, and it went from shutting off every 5 mins / ridiculously slow speed to good as new. Amazing what a difference just fresh paste made

You forgot to install the cpu.. This could totally cause the issue.

Thermal paste? More like thermal dirt.

Thermal crust

I was expecting a "remove before installing" sticker.

My go-to for that was always a soft guitar pick with the tip cut off. It seems like this was applied buy a goon with a spoon.

Nah, it's not necessary to do more than an X for larger CPUs or a pea for smaller ones. This is just thermal paste that's dried up.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Yep, the X method has served me well for decades. I honestly don't understand why some people insist on slathering on thermal paste like they were making a cake. An X and nice even pressure while you're screwing down the heatsink is all you need.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

An x, or, for real jobs (used to do big servers), 3 lines. Did tictactoe for a bit but thats overkill.

When was the last time you applied it?
